Review of Beowulf (1999) by Corinna C — 02 Mar 2011
So yeah, it's a cool movie to watch at some points, but at some points the CGI just sort of fails. Or let me rephrase that. At some points the images are so realistic that you forget you're watching a computer created movie.
And thus, when the quality of the image inevitably fails once again, you'll have this moment of frustration. The film is full of these and the beginning of the movie is especially rough until you get used to the film's style.
But aside from that the film isn't that bad. The fights are creative, look cool and the story is a classic. It's just that you don't feel much of a connection to the characters. Beowulf (Ray Winstone) is a boastful jerk, the queen (Robin Wright Penn) lacks backbone and most of the others are just macho men with no characteristics.
Though I must say that I enjoyed Angelina Jolie's role in this one, but that was more because how she looked, I must admit. Plus the ending battle had one of the worst plot holes I've ever seen.
You just cannot ignore continuity like that... All in all, a decent action movie, but nothing special.
