Review of Beowulf (1976) by Swayam B — 19 Sep 2010
Slated by critics everywhere, I feel that it will inevitably become a cult classic... another essential step along the evolutionary path of CGI, and one that I found truly absorbing from start to finish.
I do regret that the film makers decided to deviate away from the original plot of the story somewhat, and do feel they have a responsibility to stay true to any story they re-tell... but that aside I can't help but love this film for simply revelling in the fantasy world that is Beowulf. I felt that the facial expressions at times are a little lacking in detail... but other than that there is a strong sense of feeling from the characters.
The story, in its current form, also has good moral message - he may be the best warrior in the land, hacker, slasher of beasts... but he is no match for a woman's heart... and even then he's fallible and ultimately honest, and sadly his honesty coincides with his death.
Beautiful singing from Robin Wright Penn too... and Anthony Hopkins is awesome as the King. Angelina... well ... not much you can say that hasn't already been said...
