Review of Beowulf (1976) by Leigh B — 19 May 2011
This is not Beowulf!!! As a huge fan of the poem, I was both angered and disappointed by this adaptation. The plot, themes, and characters were changed so dramatically that it was almost unrecognisable.
The poem is one of the greatest works of literature ever composed - it did not need messing with. Plus, the CGI was inconsistent (some characters were great, others looked like extras from shrek), the actors' accents were all over the place, and they couldnt even pronounce the Old English correctly.
Still, it gets one star for some interesting ideas about the nature of legend, and another star for a fairly interesting story which would have had potential had they not tried to pass it off as Beowulf.
