Review of Beowulf (1976) by Lauren M — 14 Apr 2012
Ok, so I can see how seeing this in 3D and IMAX would have made it better and I can see how any group of males would love it but they seriously twisted up the Beowulf story and that made it near to unenjoyable for me.
If you are a lover of the real Beowulf story, you are in for a crude rendition of this amazing tale. Where Beowulf is noble and though he has certain pride in himself and his many exploits, this Beowulf is immersed in pride, self-absorbed and shameful and a mere shadow of what the true Beowulf could have been like.
This film was made to be SAD and a life lesson to those who would put vanity, greed and sexual gratification before the lives of others and their duty to those people. Though Beowulf's true story has some of that lesson in it, it does not bring Beowulf to his knees nor does it twist him into a human monster like this film does.
It was a great disappointment and thought asthetically pleasing, it was not worth the $10. Maybe worth the spectacle on DVD, though. If you aren't as into the legend as I am, of course.
