Review of Benny's Video (1992) by Jayden C — 26 Jun 2007
Disturbing. No blood and gore, but a simple single dare gone "wrong" into a gut-twisting event taped on video. This sets the already distant relationship between the family members into a downright awkward mood.
Which also puts an awkward pressure on the viewer by Haneke's well known fixed camera shots and the masterfully disassociative acting. When even the disassociation is being disassociated in a holiday video in Cairo the awkwardness will be coming too close to home.
Together with der Siebente Kontinente, this is Haneke at his most disturbing in urban realism.
