Review of Benny's Video (1992) by Frederick M — 28 Jul 2009
Very weird movie about a kid who's obsessed with a video showing the killing of a pig. He then lashes out and things quickly descend into madness. This movie is pretty casual about it's showing of violence but not without any purpose. The casual references to American culture and Benny's obsession with them aren't coincidental either.
This reminded me of the case in 1992 which scared the shit out of me and every 12 year old at my school. The case of the two British boys who abducted a toddler and brutally murdered him. It was someone our own age committing murder in a very casual and curious manner. This movie came out shortly afterward. I figured this movie was maybe inspired by those events but they happened afterward. Instead this movie is just prolific.
