Review of Benny's Video (1992) by Tamatai N — 17 May 2010
Very slow and decidedly boring in a few places, but still, it manages to be a fairly engaging and fascinating study into desensitization and the power the media can have over personal perceptions and ideologies.
There are some fantastic performances here (even though most of the characters are completely soulless and delusional, more-or-less scum) and a really great, somewhat disturbing concept. One good thing about the film being so slow and drawn-out, is that when something finally happens, the shock of it is twice as effective.
However, I felt that the whole thing could have been a little more exciting and there was a lot that could have been trimmed out. This ultimately makes Benny's Video good, but nothing great.
