Review of Benny & Joon (1993) by Stuart B — 12 May 2011
What could have turned out a rather pondering and cliched movie with forced quirkiness turns out to be actually quite charming mainly due to a wonderfully charming performance from Johhny Depp. He elevates the film beyond the contrived quirks, melodrama and generally poor acting (though Masterson is pretty decent as the schizophrenic girl of his dreams), as he provides spirit and energy to his role.
The score is a little distracting, as if Chechik wanted to take the poor script even further into melodrama, and the film lacks any real focus, but for the sight of Depp at his creative peak it's worth a watch nevertheless.
