Review of Benny & Joon (1993) by Zebulon R — 17 Feb 2012
Really, really solid movie. I loved it. What has Johnny Depp done that was bad? Don't answer that--it's rhetorical. But certainly, not this one. It kept my interest the entire way, and was extremely cute and funny.
All the characters are solid and versatile, and perform quite well in their roles. I don't normally notice or comment on shot selection, transitions, camera angles, scenes, etc.--but Benny & Joon excelled at each.
I'm so glad it ended the way it did, because I certainly had my pouty-lips out a couple times. It left me smiling and hope-inspired, and was so good in its class that I think it created a new genre above and beyond a mere 'romantic comedy.
