Review of Benny & Joon (1993) by Rob C — 05 Oct 2009
A role that gained Johnny Depp his second Golden Globe nomination. And with good measure, too. He plays a quirky comedic performance as a cinemaphile named Sam. I absolutely loved his demeanor here. He moves in with a mechanic in Benny (Aidan Quinn) who has taken up responsibility for his schizophrenic sister Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson).
Almost immediately Sam and Joon develop a close relationship with eachother, much to Benny's dismay. But, it's in Sam that Benny relies on to help him with his sister. Benny learns to come to accept that Joon needs to be on her own, for he to has his own life to live.
Benny & Joon is a warm-hearted film with great performances from everyone involved.
