Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Daryl K — 11 Jul 2014
A jarring switch in lead actors and a heavy-handed approach to anti-war politics as simian sci-fi, are what cause the next 'Apes' installment to stumble a bit -- that, and the sometimes obvious budget reduction.
Still, Charlton Heston does show up eventually, Maurice Evans remains great as Dr. Zaius, and one outlandish concept after another gets flung like poo at the audience. "Apocalyptic" is kind of an understatement for how this sequel wraps up, yet three more films would follow it in the series.
