Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Wendell H — 13 Jun 2008
Creepier and darker than the first (any movie with skinless mutants who worship an atomic bomb is pretty much destined to be dark and creepy), the real interesting thing about this one is the subtext. The ape war on the humans is a not so subtle comment on what was happening in Vietnam as this was being made.
Even the protesting young chimpanzees with peace and love signs are present. A bit slow to get into, it really gets moving when we get down into the mutant city. It still leaves me a bit unsettled, to be honest; but I like that.
