Review of Beneath Hill 60 (2010) by Stuart M — 23 Nov 2013
A really good WW1 film. There aren't too many of these. This one is unusual in that it's about a crew of tunnelers, so they spend most of their time underground and not in the trenches. This saves a lot on budget though they use a lot of what's left recreating the largest explosion before the atomic bomb. A lot of this film is guys sitting around listening to walls, or storing up tunnels. It isn't particularly action packed, but it does rack up the tension. Once the Germans start counter-tunneling it quickly becomes a race to see if they can set it off before they're discovered.
As an Australian war film there is a fair amount of Brit baiting, which seems to be a favorite Aussie pastime. Fortunately, the Australian cast spends most of their time alone so the appearance of Brits to mock is fairly scarce.
Despite the confined nature of the action it isn't usually a claustrophobic film. They go outside frequently and rarely shoot it so as to be terrifying.
