Review of Bend It Like Beckham (2002) by James M — 11 Jul 2010
Multicultural comedy that plays it safe by Bending it Backwards to be politically correct.
The characters are unrealistic caricatures, the story lacks genuine credibility, the romance borders on criminal and Keira Knightley goes through the whole film with a scrunchface.
The PC brigade at the UK Film Council probably thought they had the best thing since Chicken Balti here. I'd rather have watched a film about a young girl whose dream was to make the perfect aloo gobi and cling onto her strict Indian values but her parents are pressuring her into embracing relaxed Western culture.
The two stars are only because some of the scenes are filmed around the streets where I grew up. And that's all.
