Review of Below (2002) by Iga M — 27 Jun 2008
The isolated setting on board an American WWII submarine are very claustrophobic indeed, and that makes a good arena for a horror movie. Despite the interesting setting the film doesn t manage to keep the much needed tension going.
The story is really not very exciting, and there are some serious issues regarding the realism. You just don t care how it is going to end. The film really doesn t make a good job dragging you into the heat of the plot.
On the technical side it also has some big problems 3d effects are sometimes downright awful and the interior of the boat in some places just feels unrealistic for being a submarine from 1943.The cinematographic style chosen are really over the top.
All the crane and dolly movements makes you feel like your on a roller coaster ride, it s just too much and it s all over the place. But if you enjoy simple shock effects this one is for you, because they happens every 5 minutes making you jump from your seat going, what the f**k.
You can't really guess that the director (who is also responsible for Pitch Black and Chronichles of Riddick) was inspired by old Jacques Tourneur films when making this one, they just seem to have no connection at all (except for maybe pretty small budgets).
