Review of Below (2002) by Stef — 11 Feb 2011
***SPOILER WARNING***.
A bordering-on-okay horror flick. 'Ghost Ship' (which was released eleven days later) was better, if I recall correctly.
I'm a bit dubious about Captain Winters' motives in killing the *entire* crew when it was really only three men who'd wronged him (considering the fact that the Captain was supposed to have been a good man (but then again, it IS a horror flick...)), and the fact that 80% of the cast died in a freak (off screen) gas leak meets fire incident feels like lazy writing (couldn't they at least have shown it happening?!).
It's too technically inaccurate to make it a movie submarine fans would enjoy (or so my father, the submarine buff, has informed me), and there aren't enough edge-of-one's-seat moments to make it a good horror movie; the real suspense is all about the location (a tin box floating somewhere deep beneath the surface), and the lurking danger of the boat springing a leak, and I'm sorry, but if the feeling of claustrophobia is more frightening than the ghost walking around killing people, then you've done something wrong.
