Review of Belly (1998) by Tim M — 24 May 2009
Wow! Dated! Old bills with the small faces, huge phones, CRTs. Should really come with subtitles for all the Jamaican parts. Chiquita adds a sick what-the-fuck element. Love the glasses on Nas and DMX, pretty funny.
Nas: "Yo I'm going to Africa.".
DMX: "Word?".
Nas: "Word.".
DMX: "That's ill son, that's ill.".
Denzel Washington can pull of the joke glasses in Pelham 123, but here, damn, fucking ridiculous.
So much better than End of Days for an apocalyptic 2000. I hope they make something like this for 2012.
MLK 3 had me going; GOD JEEBUS BLACK PEOPLE!
"How precious a life is"? "How difficult a life is to create"? Really? So hard that in developing countries their population is exploding? It's difficult not to create life. People get vasectomies and use condoms and still have kids.
So basically this movie says go back to Africa. They make the ghetto appear to be worse than Africa. "You can take a nigga out the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto outta me.".
The female rapper that plays during the credits is sick, the Jamaican music is good too, but the rest needs more Method Man, it tragically stale.
"This film is dedicated to my yet unborn child, and all the children in the world today. The future is yours. BE STRONG." They are more Kanye West than I thought. I love how he made a video and song trying to get black people to stop liking diamonds. Really? Do people still drink cough syrup even after the guy who invented chopped and crewed died?
