Review of Belle de Jour (1967) by Hannibal O — 11 Oct 2008
It's good to see a film where a woman is a prostitute but isn't on crack or fucked up to no end. Sure she has her problems but she has a certain control over her life that is very refreshing. That's why this film works so well,I think.
Everything is from her point of view which makes it much easier to get inside her head. I love the little snippets of her past that Bunuel lets us see. It was just enough to make us think but resisted the attempt to try to put a blanket explanation over her life.
Catherine Deneuve was great and had a calm coolness about her performance. My only complaint is the ending. I just wish it would have gone a different route than the whole guy falling in lust with her and blah blah blah.
I just thought it was a cop out of sorts. It was okay but I expected something more. The last scene was great, though.
