Review of Belle de Jour (1967) by Alexander A — 20 Jul 2009
What can you say? It's an incredibly discreet film that is one of the most erotic you'll ever see. Not an easy task I'm sure. With so much skin tossed at us from every direction these days from internet porn to stripteases on YouTube to reality shows it is kind of hard to imagine what it would have been like to see this film when it came out. Though I am glad I'm not currently in my 60's I would have liked to have been around to do just that.
Catherin Deneuve is wonderful in the film and man was she some kind of attractive lady, hell for an older lady she still is. Luis Bunuel effortlessly blurs the line between fantasy and reality inside the mind of the troubled Severine. He shoots Deneuve as if he's a shy young man hiding behind the dresser or looking out from behind the curtains adding a sensuality to it all that is quite extraordinary.
Anyways, go out and watch the thing. It's a world cinema classic. No one wants to hear me ramble on about it all day long.
