Review of Belle de Jour (1967) by Bass 9 — 06 Aug 2009
First of all Catherine Deneuve couldn't look more beautiful in this movie, her beauty is mesmerizing. Now, it's about a woman who decides to become a prostitute, but it's also about the idea of fantasy.
What are the boundaries for pleasure? Why the whole idea of feeling so cheap can make a person so happy? But we don't see the drama in the movie, we see the beautiful side, the realization of the fantasies.
It's the best definition for an erotic movie, no hard core sex scenes, only hints, but it's the whole idea of pleasure through pain and humiliation. Before "Secretary", before "Basic Instinct" and before the whole theme regarding women locked in a golden cage, this movie was made, and it really went into the female mind, exploring their most filthiest desires.
Desires that most (if not all) have, and in this case she came true. It's all about wanting the lie, living the lie, and in the end, sticking to the lie.
