The surrealist edge that Bunuel adds is such a brilliant touch that days later i'm still thinking about this film. Like Cronenberg's 'Crash' it doesn't try to explain these people, it just shows them.
The performance by Catherine Deneuve is remarkable. Her screen presence is a trip, mixing naive innocence with bold curiosity. To some it might feel like the surrealist touches are like Bunuel throwing darts at a board.
Valid point, but almost every surrealist element worked so well with this material that it added layers to this film I had no clue were even possible.
