Review of Belle (2013) by Vanessa P — 26 Aug 2014
I loved the film! Many people have pointed out some of the historical discrepancies but I felt as a biracial black and white woman it touched on a lot of things we go through being raised by one or the other side of our ethnicities.
While we are proud to be both, we learn to be in between and not one or the other which they relayed in the film. The only part that was a bit stretched in her biracial experience was when the maid helped her comb her hair.
For most of my fellow biracial people we learn how to do our hair quickly in life, and even if someone did her hair all of her life, she would know the painstaking process. I did appreciate the connection they portrayed though.
My mother was clueless when it came to my hair and she finally took me to a black salon. That same kinship she finds with the maid, I felt as well since I had been solely raised by my white family. Overall a must see for biracial people, you might be able to relate to Dido!
