Review of Bell, Book and Candle (1958) by Av K — 07 Jul 2008
The most fascinating thing about this film is that it came out the same year as 'vertigo,' and repeats many similar motifs between kim novak and jimmy stewart, this time playing broad comedy. also great to see ernie kovaks in a great, understated comic performance.
it's most interesting to read the film's 'witchcraft' angle as a not-so-subtle coding for underground gay culture in the 50's. if you doubt that, read the playwright's bio.
