Review of Being There (2011) by Jennifer X — 21 Nov 2008
It's like a warmer, more humanistic version of The Graduate. Instead of cold apathy we get effortless charm. I enjoy its slow stagnancy, and the warmth of it just sort of seeps into you. Hal Ashby is an original who never compromises his vision; I sense his gentle optimism and soft satire.
Amorous Shirley Maclaine is hiLARious and whoever picked all the tv programs chose excellently. Somehow they're all relevant, but tangentially at best.
