Review of Being There (2011) by Eric F — 23 Nov 2008
Peter Sellers' last film. What a film to go out on. Hilarious, but a low-key kind of hilarious that lends itself to satire much more easily. A man with absolutely no intelligence, no knowledge of the outside world, other than what he's learned from watching television, is suddenly thrown face first into the real world.
Hilarity ensues. Through a series of mishaps, Chance the Gardener ends up in the care of a dying businessman and his wife. As his restrained comments about gardening are mistaken for profundity, he becomes the prime choice for the vice-presidency.
One of the best satires of American ignorance out there, and very relevant given the recent presidential election. Sarah Palin is Chance. George Bush is Chance.
