Review of Being There (2011) by Chris D — 11 May 2012
It's quite an odd sort of comedy: it inspired few outright howls of laughter from me, but the entire execution of Seller's character was so well done and hilarious in its outcomes the film does succeed as a sort of satire of human motives and desires.
People emote AROUND Seller's character, who is very simple yet inspires amazing pronouncements by other luminaries. Peter Sellers is so perfect in this role that I couldn't see it any other way: there is no winking at the screen, and at no point does the film expose his true self, although one character does appear to discover he is not as complicated as he seemed.
A very high-level sort of comedy: I was mesmerized by its implications, and the closing scene was pure excellence.
