Review of Being There (1979) by Mike T — 30 May 2009
Magnificent, weird film. Peter Sellers plays a mentally stunted gardener whose blank slate and constant references to gardening make him a hit amongst power brokers in DC. Between Melvyn Douglas thinking he's the golden child, and Shirley MacLaine constantly coming on to him, this film has too many awkward laughs to count.
Slow and sad at the beginning, but the farce kicks in after the first half hour. I wonder how many Chauncey Gardeners there really are in Washington. As odd as the story is, it just seems so probable.
