Review of Being There (1979) by Jeffery T — 13 Jun 2010
I dont know that I buy this as much as everyone else seems to have. its a fine and occasionally funny film. the best part is peter sellers, quite naturally. he does not play it for the comedy, he plays it as its written and as he interprets the character.
im just not sure how seriously you can take the satire. its not bad satire, it just doesnt seem to serve as much of a purpose to me, as many claim that it does. by the end, I feel like the film is much more tragic than it would seem to be initially.
it turns out that its very bleak, and there is no chance that sellers character can go on in the world. I find that more than a little unnerving.
