Review of Being There (1979) by Dan H — 18 Jul 2010
Slow in places is the absolute worst I can say about this film. It proved to be a quite surprising and deeply insightful commentary on life. It's a state of mind, as they said in the film. At the same time very charming and uplifting. Cheered me up for a little bit. There's been so many movies about retarded people I thought it would be cliched, but it seems like sometimes people really do only need one shot to get something right.
Take a fucking hint, Michael Bay. The prick's remaking the Birds.
There really should not have been a single movie about mentally challenged dudes after 1979. This one did it well. 80% of the rest of them (which includes all of Adam Sandler's shit minus Waterboy and MAYBE Punch Drunk Love) were shit.
A very gentle film, which sublimely utilized its subject matter. It's a shame to see it mauled so hamhandedly by other directors in subsequent films.
