Review of Being There (1979) by Bill C — 12 Sep 2010
One of those films that always pops-up as highly rated and you should really see. It really only reminds me of one film, Forrest Gump, but more in a high concept. Ashby and Sellers have very little compassion for the character of Chance and they basically leave his character as both mentally challenged as well as emotionally disconnected from the people around him.
His mental state and unwavering outlook leaves him a positive mirror to the people around him. Through a series of improbable circumstances he rises to approaching the pinnacle of power in the United States.
Although ground breaking for its time with its plots of puppeteered politicians, ultra rich society and sexuality. There have many movies that have done it better since. Worth a watch to see where the other films take their cues from.
