Review of Being Julia (2004) by Danny L — 06 Aug 2008
I wasn't that impressed. Maybe I'm just a jerk, but I really could not buy Annette Bening as an amazing stage actress. I know the acclaim this film got, and even after watching it I was not entirely convinced that it was all warranted.
Though, I must say I loved the ending. So what if the character is completely vile? So what if she was unforgivably cruel to a girl that was almost an innocent, but for the men that gave her attention? The show within the movie, that final scene, was really amazing, when you're so involved in the story that you really believe she's improving those lines for that audience.
I also loved the relationship between Julia and her husband. Not conventional, indeed. How very modern. His reaction after the play was the best. Ever. I wish they could have been explored a bit more.
