Review of Being Julia (2004) by Daniel K — 18 Mar 2009
This is the kind of film one wishes were made all the time. There are definitely not enough pictures out there that showcase the considerable talents of some of our best actresses. Annette Bening has exactly what it takes here.
There is nothing truly exceptional or spectacular about the picture, but everything about it whispers of an understated elegance and grace. Great cast. Great performances. Excellent directing and writing.
Worth seeing more than once. I definitely don't see enough pictures with Jeremy Irons. It's the type of film that reminds one of the Merchant/Ivory/Jhabvala mystique, even if it isn't handled as well.
