A lot of things make "Being John Malkovich" a brilliant film. The absurd premise makes it highly entertaining; John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener, and John Malkovich give outstanding performances; and the screenplay is sharp and wholly original.
But what makes this film a truly excellent achievement is the subject matter beyond the plot that gets covered in less than two hours, from existential crises, to transgender issues, to the importance of loving one's self -- all of it wrapped up in a dense, dark, somewhat psychotic comedic thriller.
