Review of Being John Malkovich (1999) by Oliver F — 11 Jun 2013
Being John Malkovich provides a bizarre and disconcerting look into the nature of the self and the human mind. Through it's profoundly surreal narrative structure, the film explores humanity's selfish urge to become something else in order to escape the banality of everyday life.
The film also grapples with questions regarding what defines a person - is it our experiences, or our appearances that shape us? Or are we merely puppets being manipulated by a force greater than which any of us can behold? Carried by powerful performances by Cusack, Diaz, and of course, Malkovich himself, Being John Malkovich succeeds as a darkly intellectual, yet comedic film.
