It's not perfect, but it's so highly inventive and intellectually stimulating that the flaws are forgiveable. This film traversed new territory for imaginative screenwriting; an absurdist fairytale with philosophical backbone, not to mention a view of how manipulation through our social/gender identities works.
It's far from an intellectual commentary and I don't mean to undermine the fact that it is absolutely a blast. Yes, John Malkovich goes through his own portal.
