Review of Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey (2011) by Andrew D — 16 Apr 2012
Who would have known that when Elmo's torso ends, an incredible story begins. "Being Elmo" is an exceptionally produced and directed documentary and more than just an origin story of what has become the world's favorite Muppit.
It is the story of a poor kid from the suburbs of Baltimore who wanted to be a puppeteer, got his shot and, ultimately, turned a second-rate Sesame Street character into the adorable Elmo. A rags to riches story indeed, but Kevin Clash got his riches not from exploiting others or striking oil, but from bringing love, compassion and affection into the lives of millions of children.
"Being Elmo" isn't just a must-see for parents of toddlers smitten by the red-haired and orange-nosed character. Its a must-see, period.
