Review of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) by Ian B — 18 Dec 2007
Definitely one of the more interesting horror films I've seen in recent years. I thought the documentary style look really worked and Nathan Baesel carried the film quite well. It had some great, weird comedic moments and I really liked how Michael Myers, Jason and Freddy were "real", but it all kinda fell apart in the third act.
When it turns into an actual slasher movie the problem is that it turns into a bad one. Characters make ridiculous decisions, the tension dries up and the cliches start rolling in. There aren't even any crazy, over-the-top kills to hold your attention.
But I think it's definitely worth a look.
