Review of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) by Jody B — 18 Oct 2009
In this mockumentary of the slasher genre, every convention is picked apart straight from the horse?s mouth ? the homicidal maniac himself. A film crew follows the titular character around as he explains each and every step of the way leading up to the night he plans to murder several teenagers up to and including ?the virgin girl?.
If you have ever wondered why people do the things they do or why the plot unfolds in a certain way in a slasher film, Vernon has the explanation for it.
Director Scott Glosserman has obviously been a fan of this genre and knows the ins-and-outs of it. There is a turning point in the film where it temporarily seems to slip into the same conventions it mocks, but falls back into place nicely in the climax.
In the sea of torture porn, J-horror ports, and remakes, this film is gem and a breath of fresh air.
