Behind the Mask is a fun parody of the slasher genre. Horror fans will appreciate the lengthy breakdown of Vernon's proposed killing spree and the cameos by Freddy Krueger and the medium from Poltergeist.
However, the movie loses its luster when it drops its mockumentary style and turns into a straight-up slasher flick. Despite some intense scenes, it's just hard to take Vernon seriously after spending an hour observing his goofy demeanor.
