Review of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) by Derek H — 25 Mar 2008
Man Bites Dog meets Jason/Freddy/Michael. A documentary crew follows a man aspiring to be the next great serial killer. Manages to have it's self-referential genre cake and eat it too, because it's unwinking and unflinching in it's presentation.
The filmmakers know their way around horror once all hell breaks loose. Smart script makes Scream look like The Hills. Clutch acting, especially Nathan Baesal, who's equally charming and chilling and a fab cameo by Robert Englund.
That rare movie where "meta" isn't a four-letter word.
