Review of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) by Mike I — 20 May 2009
Kind of a Best In Show for the slasher set, this kinda-funny, yet overly silly mockumentary holds a lot of humor for fans of the horror genre. The 3rd act "twist" is fairly obvious, as the film turns into a rather run-of-the-mill chase-and-kill scenario (which is, admittedly, the point.
) The lead performances are good after a shaky start while the actors find their footing; especially good is Nathan Baesel as Leslie. Surprisingly light in the gore department which is odd considering the target audience.
This was very much made with great affection for slasher film tropes--more so than say Scream (it's hard NOT to compare the two), which had a harsher underlying cynicism than this does. Not a complete success but more than enough to kill 90 minutes.
..if you're into this kind of thing.
