Review of Behind the Candelabra (2013) by Keith C — 24 May 2013
The story is what it is. Any film of the great Liberace could go way over the top and be caricaturist. I think Steven Soderbergh did a great job on this film. It's the story of a very closeted entertainer (Liberace - played by Michael Douglas) and his secret 5 year love affair with Scott Thorson (played by Matt Damon) Douglas give a great consistent performance that is not an over the top impression of Liberace.
I found his performance to be a result of good research and shows respect for the man. Damon shows his great acting chops again in this film and really knows how to get out of a hot tub and walk away from the camera nicely.
SPOILER ALERT: Buns are shown!!!! (A couple of times) Rob Lowe is great as the plastic surgeon Dr. Jack Startz. Debbie Reynolds plays Liberace's mother. Her make up to resemble her is so good you hardly recognize Debbie.
You can't mistake the voice though... you know it's Debbie. For those who were/are familiar with Liberace, this film shows a darker, secretive and sexual side not revealed before. For those who are not familiar with him, I recommend after watching this, research this incredibly talented flamboyant pioneer for his onstage showmanship.
He was truly a great entertainer. Enjoy!
