Review of Behind the Candelabra (2013) by Graham B — 27 May 2013
Is this Soderbergh's swan song? He seems to have so many encores. If it is, then he has gone out with a charm.
It's a great portrayal of Liberace and Michael Douglas has him down to a tee. I must say that people go on about women appearing naked in a film as being brave. Gorgeous looking women appearing nude on film. Well, Michael Douglas is brave personified in that case. Often appearing with his saggy skin and moobs next to the glorious buns(and they are glorious) of Damon is worthy of an Oscar in itself! Damon is great too. It his his story after all and it shines in his favour naturally, though it doesn't shy away from Scott Thorson's bad points.
Basically the film tells a tale of a man living in the shadow of his lover. It lineates the story up to history and though Liberace does come off as the hypocrite he was, it is a faithful study and a very good film.
Steven it is not your best, but I'm glad this is a cinema affair rather than a HBO miniseries.
