Review of Behind the Candelabra (2013) by Rainer D — 29 May 2013
Trashy, bitchy, and 100% watchable. What would happen if you made a Liberace movie, put Michael Douglas as Liberace, and Matt Damon as his lover, Scott Thorton? You get this movie, and it's about as good as these two guys can make it.
I was consistently surprised at how much out there the two actors put into their parts. Michael Douglas just seems to be having an absolute BLAST playing Liberace. If you really think about it, his natural speaking voice and Liberace's voice aren't exactly that much different, which just adds to Douglas's very over the top portrayal.
Matt Damon's part isn't all that flashy, but he plays Thorton with a touchy humanistic element that's both touching and hilarious. The whole movie is quite hilarious actually, with much.. MUCH bitchness going on.
I was thoroughly entertained by this. It's not for everyone, as it's hardly tame subject matter, but definitely worth a watch for people who like their movies dirty, glitzy and gossipy (aka everyone I know).
