Review of Behind the Candelabra (2013) by David G — 08 Jun 2013
Behind the Candelabra is entertaining in the way movies rarely are, propelled by its playful tone, good-looks, and most importantly our own curiosity, enticed by Michael Douglass's incredible performance.
I want to give him an Oscar and nominate the film for many more. It's that well done in all departments. Not that this needs mentioning, but the homosexual subject matter I thought was treated extremely well, showing people defined and destroyed by love (not to mention the celebrity leads so comfortable in their roles).
As a biopic, this film is a magnificent success. We see multiple sides of Liberace, what he wants us to see and what he doesn't. His legacy is defined in the stunning last scene. Liberace's message is tough to nail down, and there are a few ways people will see him by the end, showing how substantial the film is.
He gives us the opportunity to dream and to be our happiest, then rips it away. I can't see anyone not enjoying it. Top shelf, A plus.
