Review of Behind the Candelabra (2013) by Chase S — 20 Jun 2013
A story of love, in all of its flaws and beauty, between two lonely souls who've craved a certain love for so long until they first laid eyes on each. This is the inspiring, moving, and tragic story of the relationship between Scott Thorson and pianist Liberace. This story is captured and displayed in front of your eyes in a recently aired film "Behind the Candelabra".
The film takes a realistic route and doesn't put too much emphasis on the fact that these lovers are in fact two men. It feels real. It's love. Michael Douglas gives such a performance that it's a shame it didn't receive a theatrical release because he would've received an Oscar for his work as Liberace. But it would be in the supporting category as Scott Thorson is the real focus of the film. Superbly played by Matt Damon in my favorite performance by him. He doesn't play it gay. He plays it real. Which is how it is. He never goes over the top. He has, in my mind, the most challenging role in the film and he doesn't disappoint and exceeds expectations. While he does deserve it, it's a shame Douglas is receiving all of the credit. Because Damon is the real star of the film.
