Review of Behind the Candelabra (2013) by Damien F — 09 Aug 2013
This is a really well made, well acted and the attention to detail is so well done it's unbelievable. To start with the performances are so great. I forgot that Micheal Douglas was playing Liberace he is so convincing.
From the makeup and the costumes he doesn't put a foot wrong. I was never a fan of liberace's myself but I learnt some very interesting things about his life watching the man portrayed like this.
The man sure liked piano's and candelabra's and paintings of himself. Everybody knows that he could play the piano like nobodie's business. It's a pity that this only got a release on HBO in the US because he deserved a oscar for this.
He'll have to settle for a emmy and a golden globe I think. On to Matt Damon as liberace's lover Scott Thorson and he as usual goes all out this time. This biopic starts in 1977 and goes to around 1986 or so.
The screenplay is also based on scott thorson's book. There's also 2 great performances from Dan Akroyd and Rob Lowe as liberace's agent and his plastic surgeon respectfully. There are scenes of some very realistic plastic surgery too.
Steven Soderbergh keeps making these great films and it's a shame that his output won't be as prolific in the future.
