It's usually refreshing to see a film based on true events which I have next to no knowledge about. In this instance, the subject is Liberace (famous American pianist) and his secret love affair with his male assistant.

I can appreciate the difficulty and the commitment needed for heterosexual actors to fulfil these parts but Michael Douglas and Matt Damon act superbly, clearly becoming fully engrossed in their roles.

Interesting as it was to see a depiction of Liberace and this controversial time in his life, it just wasn't dramatic enough to validate a higher rating. It is in essence a mere tale of affection, jealousy and superficiality.

If it wasn't for the strong performances, I could easily have thought I was watching 'TOWIE' or 'Made in Chelsea'. So in short, the narrative behind 'Behind the Candelabra' is nothing to get massively excited about but, by the looks of things, they did pretty well with what material they had.

This review of Behind the Candelabra (2013) was written by on 20 Mar 2014.
