Carefully restrained and well told. Repeatedly avoids the cliches you expect, and instead provides enough of the unexpected to keep a slow burn story involving and surprisingly satisfying. Some of the idioms in the dialogue sounded too recent for the period, and a few bits of the story weren't fully filled out, likely due to edits keeping it tight and not too long.

Both minor niggles, and neither spoil the result.
