Review of Begotten (1991) by Thorne W — 16 Jun 2008
I think it's probably best viewed when you actually know what it's about, because then you can at least make some connections. It's an Avant-Garde film, a form of Dada, or "anti-art".
The rules are different for this form of film making, it seems that what is classically viewed as beautiful is thrown at the window and horrifyingly crude and violent images become what is sought after.
This is not for the average movie-goer, it will probably disgust and frighten you, as it really is a nightmare put to film. In all honesty, the only reason it is still so popular is most likely because of the intriguing look of the film, the result of photocopying highly exposed black and white frames during post-production.
Bottom line, if you're an artist, check this thing out, the cursed video tape from 'The Ring' was probably inspired by this.
